AUGUST 10, 2024

This is my contribution to Autocratik’s event happening during the month of August aimed to talk more about the hobby of table top roleplaying games.

Film and TV are hand in hand with table top RPGs my most prominent hobby. I prefer games to be cinematic, to use screenplay narrative tools, to build scenes as if there was camera present and my favourite level of historical accuracy is “Hollywood historical” - a level where it should make sense for the believability of the scene on camera, but never to stop the game correcting the less important historical details. That is an activity for after the game, and I love to do historical research based on a game I am playing.

I was looking forward to this prompt, because I thought I will have a clear easy answer, but the more I thought about it, the more games I found that would make great TV show or even a silver screen movie. I put aside the games, that are already based on some TV genre and built around the structure of such medium even though these are among my favourites:

I considered multiple strong contenders and would watch all such shows - from noir New York 1930s Cthulhu Confidential adventures of journalist Vivian Sinclair, starring Cate Blanchett in the lead, epic tale of rebellion in ancient Java based on Villagesong starring Ario Bayu and Joe Taslim as childhood friends and village leaders turned enemies by the world around them, or even network of revolutionaries working for The Ministry to liberate the impossible city of Spire starring David Fane as knight of an ancient order that lost everything.

However, my pick for today is the haunted city of Duskvol and John Harper’s Blades in the Dark.

A city drowning in permanent twilight and ghosts that cannot leave. Within this city full of competing faction, corruption and crime, a small new and ambitious group of criminals is trying to snatch their bite of the pie. Starring Lupita Nyong'o as a talented leech who is hiding from an Iruvian noble house, David Tennant as well-connected spider with a dark secret, Iwan Rheon as risk-taking whisper who does everything for his dead sister, and Devery Jacobs as hound that never misses, followed by her ghost cat.
